When it comes to property maintenance, addressing a clogged gutter may not be the first thing you think of, nor the most glamorous of tasks. It also isn’t one of the safest either. However, failing to keep your gutter in a healthy condition can have a destructive effect on your property, increasing the risks of water damage, mould and mildew. Below are our top five reasons to keep your gutters clean.
One of the biggest reasons to keep your gutters in check is to prevent any damage to the building’s roof. A build-up of leaves and other debris will clog up the gutter to the point where rainwater will not be able to flow and start to flood over, this can then result in the roof rotting.
Cracks in Foundation
When water overflows and pools into the property’s foundation, it can start to freeze in the colder weather. By doing this, it can expand and start to create cracks within the foundations.
Keeping out Pests
With a build-up of twigs, leaves and other objects, it can be a nesting ground for unwanted pests. An unkept gutter might become a new home to a small family of birds.
Damage to Brackets
Gutters filled with muck hold too much weight, which can cause damage to the brackets. A clogged gutter won’t be very effective, but neither will a broken one!
Damage to Fascia
The fascia is the board that runs parallel to your gutter. When water overflows, it can damage this vital component of the guttering system, by creating mould which weakens the wood.
